Imagining the Trump White House – A Décor Story

The only cabinet reviewed for this Trump piece is connected to the kitchen. Once the future First Family moves into 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue its interior may forego traditional floral patterns and heavy draperies for a gilded take. The White House could very well become The Gold House.

Office that Works

While working at &co may not be a home office where you can wear slippers to work, it delivers on personalized appeal. Gone are the days of Office Depot desks adorned with stackable files that have the charm of an airport terminal. Designer Rebecca Johnson transformed this 20,000 square foot space into a destination so employees can be inspired and enthused in a styled workplace. “The aim was to create a space where modern thinkers dwell, a sun filled oversized loft, with clean lines for focus in harmony with objects of curiosity to ignite the imagination,” says Johnson.

Xray boxes is one of the many vintage design elements to characterize &co's office space with signature appeal.

Xray boxes showcasing art is one of the vintage design elements that characterize &co’s office space with signature appeal.

&co is a work and cultural space in downtown Jersey City created as a hub for young local talent, creatives and entrepreneurs. Johnson, also an upcoming professional, treated the space with a mix of classic, vintage and modern pieces. Highlights include x-ray viewing boxes, chairs, clocks, cabinets and salvaged fire alarms. Finnish lighting by Muuto, and a living green wall give the offices a green, artistic appeal. Johnson’s home design approach to professional environs seeps into office culture, which builds on &co’s mission. She blurs the boundaries between office and home design by bringing in customary elements when creating a home. Wallpaper, wood floors, wall treatments, bright paint, tile and art are all incorporated in the office. “Surround yourself with items that inspire you, display your favorite books, frame artwork and always, add plants!” says Johnson.

A relaxed space may be the answer to productivity and better work. “A great office creates an atmosphere that allows people to focus, yet energizes. Using primarily neutral grays with blue and green hues reduce stress and create an atmosphere of calm that is easy for communication,” Johnson says.

Accessories customary in the home extend to the office. Potted plants cater to the calming atmosphere of the Wellness Room.

Johnson’s Principals to a Styled Space

Style with Accents:

Unexpected details make a workspace engaging, as seen in the rug, vintage furnishings, accessories and lighting.

  • Upgrade to a stylish task chair to brighten a room.
  • Swap the dull side chair for a lush accent seat.
    Add an eccentric throw pillow.
  • Eccentric details charge the space with imagination; like the intricate patterned wallpaper, and modern light fixtures.
  • 1950’s re-purposed antiques and artifacts have become unique conversation pieces and aid the natural flow of conversation.
  • Chairs that are equal parts stylish and comfortable are key to plugging in for a long day or work or casual conversation.

Light Approach:

  • Task lighting is necessary but can be cool and harsh, warm up your space with a modern floor or desk lamp.
  • Give due notice to your overhead lights as a way to bring in design and function.

Warm Up Practices:

An attention to lighting creates a mood with a shared style of the space.

  • Increase warmth by bringing in a vintage or colorful patterned rug.

Customize for Personality:

Scandinavian brand Muuto, deriving its name from the Finnish word “new perspective,” represents the majority of lighting fixtures.

  • Custom made elements in the space include millwork for bar, banquettes and benches, reception desk, steel and glass facades and mirrors.

Mixing Work and Pleasure:

Conferences may go over time in a space that caters to the worker with cozy touches.

  • A space can both polished and playful simultaneously. Seeking a balance with traditional and modern shapes, organic and synthetic material, neutral and charged hues. Finding harmony amongst color and texture is important—if you want to incorporate a bright hue use it as a compliment to a neutral base palette. Organization of elements in your space is key.

Synergize Function and Design:

  • The only seat in the space that is not within a few inches of a power source is the lounge and wellness room, which was intentional. Conversation is promoted in the lounge while in the wellness room members are encouraged to disconnect and recharge. In our current screen obsessed worlds it is important to remember to nurture relationships with clients and oneself.

House Tour – Pretty & Pastel Mountain Home

A mountain home does not need elk chandeliers and Tyrolean accents to be deemed alpine. A modern retreat with a relaxed tone is the ideal way to come home after kicking snow from the grooves of your boots. Using a color palette of chalky pink, blue and gray, padded with an abundance of textiles and natural light, restorative exhales happen without having to take a yoga class in this Calgary home designed by Aly Velji Designs. The residence clearly has the imprint of an expert who deftly blends style and function but loaded with personalized detailing.

A calming color palette and soft accents warm up this Calgary residence.

A calming color palette and soft accents warm up this Calgary residence.

Pretty and pink is not just for a girl’s room with ballerina bedding and shag rugs, it is also very grown up. The palette compliments the sophisticated, warm style where the right details support the designer’s mission. Pillows, novelty boxes and accents don’t have that peel-off-the-price-tag newness. The rooms show a thoughtful gathering of appointed pieces that balance design and functionality with a gentle spin.

Velji found that the home’s basic elements were in place but needed a decor eye to create a story. “The entry was lackluster, so we added the zebra rug and the custom photo wall for some interest. Bespoke pillows for the dining room, accessorizing the mantle, adding in a few key pieces of furniture really brought the space some cohesion,” he says.

Adding a photo wall, zebra print rug and the right touches of style the entry.

In the bedroom they added customized molding, bedding, powder blue drapery and wallpaper to the back wall to create a focal point. A vintage light fixture secures the room as a one-of-a-kind space.

In the family room navy and cream connect to delicious patterns and texture through the fabrics and accessories. A customized sofa and ottoman provide comfort that support the scheme.

An attention to prints and customized pieces create a designed family room.

Aly Velji Designs spills on how to soften a space through accents:

Softening a space can be as easy as adding pillows, window coverings and tactile furnishings. Softness is often associated with feminine rooms however every space needs soothing notes no matter how modern or masculine a design.

An appreciation of color, fabrics and an edited display soften a room.

Designer tricks to create a styled look:

We style every space with many accessories. We love to work with the client’s belongings and mix them with new pieces to freshen the look. The key to a well-styled space is all about the details. We tend to bring in more than we need and edit. It takes awhile but you know when you have it just right.

Bring in a lot of pieces to style then edit.

Bring a variety of acents to style then edit.

How to make pastels work in a grownup home:

It is all about how you use certain colors, make them grownup, and what you pair them with. We added soft pastel tones in this space but mixed them with more neutral colors and heavier furnishings like the dining and coffee tables. These two elements help ground each space and create a more sophisticated vibe.

Combine heavier pieces with soft colors to neutralize a look for adult living.

Combine heavier pieces with soft colors to neutralize a look for a modern retreat.

In the know trade/designer secrets:

Install custom panels for window coverings rather than full wall-to-wall drapery. This will add softness to your space and keep you on budget.

A mix of pillows with customized fabrics is a designer-approved splurge.

A mix of pillows with customized fabrics is a designer-approved splurge.

A flat weave rug adds pattern and color and is more cost effective than a hand-knotted wool carpet.

Mix it up:

  • Mix your metals.
  • Mix floral patterns and textures to create a pulled together look.
  • Mix your design styles
  • Mix and match your pillows. Splurge on a gorgeous must have fabric for custom pillows and mix them up with ready made throw cushions.

Autumn Style – Let Nature Take Its Course

Nature’s pageantry gets a bit show offy in autumn. The leaves give us their fiery grand finale. Biceps get a workout from making stews thick with root vegetables. Oilcloth coats are freed from storage. Decorating for the season is at its best when following fall’s ardent spirit.

Leaves changing their colors creates their own spectacle.

Autumn saturated leaves direct the season’s decor theme.

Keep accents cohesive over competitive. Colored textiles, pumpkins and foods offer subtle highlights to a home.

Slow Luxury – Handmade Makes a Difference

Good things take time. Great things take even longer, which are early lessons learned from children’s stories about cocky hares and hard-working hens. In luxury goods a piece that is handmade, while time consuming, garners our splurge because it meets our standards.

Chez M'Lain works with over 200 artisans who have learned their hand skills over time.

Chez M’Lain works with over 200 artisans who have learned their hand skills over time.

It is hard to imagine hand loomed pieces lost as a result of a machine’s ability to replicate the production process like groceries checked from a self-scanner. That our children will only know of genuine embroidery or crafted items from paintings they learn in Art History. While the world has become clever and efficient, those who value real versus machine made are also likely attuned to vegetables being pulled from natural soil or wrinkles treated with French creams over a surgeon’s intrusion on our natural appearance. We don’t want to compromise quality whether it be something we eat, use or how we look. Such is the calling of Chez M’Lain designer Amelia Fendell.

“We are living in an interesting time,” says Amelia. “Technology has enhanced most experiences and unequivocally created a demand for immediate gratification. Whether it be quick information, a quick view of product, a quick ship item–the world has shifted into a fast gear that has created demands for fast response.”

Enjoying life at a slower pace with fine things that are handmade adds to the experience. It is these little luxuries, which make the difference between an occasion and a celebration.

Enjoying life at a slower pace with fine things that are handmade adds to the experience. It is these little luxuries, which make the difference between an occasion and a celebration.

In choosing pieces you want to live with, decorative items do not follow the assembly line process of making a sandwich. “Chez M’Lain does not operate at the same speed. We are in a much slower gear, a careful and conscious gear that celebrates the time honored skills of craftsmanship and quality material,” says Amelia.

Why Handmade Makes A Difference

  • The cost may be higher but the value is greater. It’s a sensible purchase that will outlive trends and endure.
  • There is a singular appeal to the item that adds a quality look to your home and style.
  • You are contributing to the art form of handmade and keeping craftspeople at work.
The tension of a craftsperson’s draw or pull on the thread, the cloth or loom, is the unique fingerprints of the artisan. They give each piece their individuality and a uniqueness of its own.

Today’s consumers can identify dozens of logos and where to get them fast. The educated consumer is wearier to click and proceed to checkout until they truly identify with the product’s worth. “Basically, I spend on quality not quantity,” says Amelia. “I am not swayed by designer logos and brands because having worked in the industry for so many years I know the defining difference that long lasting quality comes from the designer’s choice to choose the finest materials and utilize superior craftsmanship. I know good things take time and I am prepared to wait for quality,” she says.

Fab Prefabs – Luxurious and Green

Building homes so large cell phones are needed as tracking devices is one way to keep family apart. Sustainable design in prefab homes take a different approach, to utilize square footage effectively with an attention to style and comfort.

This Catskills residence by Resolution: 4 Architecture is both stunning and efficiently designed.

This Catskills residence by Resolution: 4 Architecture is both stunning and efficiently designed.

Today’s architects are attune to climate changes and an unpredictable economy. Sensible builders consider dwindling resources and how to live with the style and efficiency of a 24K iPod. Household budgets should not be squandered on heating rooms that are used on occasion. Incorporating sustainable methods to stay within budget is smart living, the premise of new luxury prefabs.

Prefabricated homes emphasize quality while being manufactured offsite to minimize costs. Luxury prefabs layer on architectural interest, which promotes living within one’s needs rather than compete to be the biggest on the block. Every room is utilized, a practice that follows sustainable building. Joseph Tanney, a prefab architect with Resolution: 4 Architecture, merges green with superior design.

Tanney used his experience from building high-end loft spaces in Manhattan to help develop a system of design called the Modern Modular. The majority of the Modern Modular home is built offsite and then delivered in modules, like big Legos, which is less of a strain on the local ecosystem.

The new luxury prefab is one part organic and another part futuristic. “There is a strong sense of arrival, a smart transition from the automobile into house,” says Tanney. Organic symmetry happens between the interior and exterior from its use of glass, wood and earthy elements. “There is  a well designed exterior space, decks, terraces and outdoor fireplaces,” says Tanney.

Other features include state-of-the-art kitchen and communal area, built-in cabinetry for storage, low-maintenance quality materials such as bamboo floors, well-insulated windows, solar panels, green roofs and natural landscaping.

Glass windows and doors, stone fireplace and sufficient lighting, take inspiration from the outdoors.

A prefab home is comfortable, economical and allows you to live in a designer shade of green.

Joseph Tanney and the Modern Modular Advantage:
  • Modern home design can be transformed to take advantage of the economical, environmental and structural benefits of standard, proven construction techniques.
  • Advances in home construction technology have transformed the way in which houses are made, through factory assemblyderived construction techniques.
  • Through a keen understanding of the central role that the American house plays in daily life, Modern Modular seeks to allow the home building industry to meet the needs and desires of homeowners of the 21st century.
  • A full line of houses can fit into different uses, be it a solitary residence, weekend home, or fullfamily house.
  • Houses are fully customizable to meet functional requirements of different locations and climates.
  • Homes are easily expandable and transformed, allowing Modern Modular homes to grow and adapt to its residents.
  • Using the same customizable structure available in purchasing personal computers, Modern Modular transforms the traditional relationship between architect and client in home construction.

Ultimate Cottage Bathroom

A true indication of a successful relationship is the ability to share a bathroom. It helps when the room has all the trappings of a great space: recessed lighting, high ceilings, chrome hardware, painted in Spirit in the Sky blue with stones that were individually plotted on a floor of gooey concrete. The main necessity is individual space, as seen with the dual sinks and medicine cabinets so your items don’t have to comingle.

The Finer Things – Design by Christiane Lemieux

It’s hard to imagine Christiane Lemieux assembling backpacks and corralling kids for school but this is how the design doyenne lives. The mother of two resides in a downtown loft and on her time off from family duties sets the pulse in home decor. Perhaps motherhood is why her designs are spot on with her bold mix of geometric linens and chandeliers that appear modeled from Cleopatra’s jewelry box. Real people cannot worry about spillage on the cashmere throw.

boy's room designed with an attention to colors, wallpaper and fine pieces, copyright by David A. Land.

Lemieux’s life practices translate to her aesthetic. She values quality, sustainability and how urbanites in smaller spaces capitalize on good design. There is a personalized blend in a finer home that an interior designer cannot replicate with their paper furniture cutouts and decorator discounts at stores with their own catalog. You may find a leopard print rug aside a golden mid-century chaise or painting hung over heavy drapery. You won’t be able to go into the room and source where all the furnishings came from. In fact the owner most likely has a story on how the items were acquired to further distinguish their space. This is what Christiane Lemieux reveals in her new design book The Finer Things.

Bedroom with layered fabric treatments, copyright by Eric Piasecki / OTTO.

Lemieux avoids design rules but is true to a few basic principles that hinge on an appreciation of quality. “I am a Millennial at heart,” she says. “They are the generation who believes in quality.” While Millennials buy less they make the investment in quality pieces that can easily be supplemented with lesser-valued items. To Lemieux the approach is both modern and classic, like the Parisian woman who has the Hermes scarf all her life and supplements with pieces from Zara.

Dramatic use of paint and color, copyright by Eric Piasecki / OTTO; interior design by Steven Gambrel.

“People do not decorate with period end of sentence. It is fluid. A reflection as to who they are,” says Lemieux. She features a representation of rich spaces that do not follow a generic design formula but they all share an appreciation of finer things. “I found the best experts in their field,” she says. The professed researcher and “huge nerd” began the project by researching the Conde Nast archives, gaining insight on the history of quality design, the foundation of all enduring trends. For those interested in wallpaper she went to Mitchell Ehrlich who added such treatments to the White House.

In The Finer Things Lemieux guides readers to the world’s most elegant residences that feature a variety of styles. She formats the book into a design encyclopedia with supporting imagery and useful information on walls, floors, furniture, textiles, accessories and resources. Even the golden patterned hard cover has designer cred as a handsome book that will seamlessly fit on well-designed shelves or tables.

Christiane Lemieux’s Design Tips:

When to Invest: Put the research into strong investment pieces and where to take shortcuts.

Artisanal Approach: Pieces that are handmade by top craftspeople is a key component to quality design

To DIY or Not DIY: I love DIY but be aware of when to bring in the experts. Some things are more challenging, like wallpaper, and it will not meet your expectations unless it’s done correctly.

Comfort Is Foremost: Home is all about comfort, which loses its relaxed presence when it is overly done right down to the karate chop in the pillow.

Personalized Places: The most interesting homes are when people style it their own way.

Fashionable Features: Design is much more fluid. What we are seeing online and in fashion is all fusing into your home. Social media has blown the parameters off of what you can view. I compare design to fashion because it is much more of the moment. Once decorators were paid handsomely for projects that would be lived in for 20 years. People are now switching up their spaces more often.

Keeping It Real: I switch things up regularly due to the wear and tear from kids. I want guests to not feel they have to take their shoes off. Layers provide warmth, like throws and pillows, which can be switched out for the seasons.

Laura Ashley Update-Get the Look

For a girl who came of age in the 80s sleeping within walls papered with Laura Ashley’s signature pink rosebuds was a right of passage, like sipping wine coolers and flirting with the cute exchange student in class but less rebellious. Some of those pieces made it to your college dorm or the plush towels added a nostalgic quality to the pink tiled bathroom in your first apartment. (Yes, I am speaking from experience).

Two worlds collide with classic Laura Ashley prints, modernized, and accented with contemporary pieces. Sleek fixtures and glamour additions build on the theme.

Two worlds collide with classic Laura Ashley prints modernized and accented with contemporary pieces. Sleek fixtures and glamourous notes build on the theme.

Though can the unabashedly girly brand find a place in our contemporary, more experienced modern lives? It can. Classics endure but they are less frilly with the right layers. Penne Cairoli, the President of Laura Ashley USA says the latest collection is pretty and feminine but still remains smart looking.

A floral table setting is less granny china in chunkier shapes. The right accents add glamor and whimsy.

“Silver Serenity takes its inspiration from a new addition to our archives, this pretty Peony design in a wonderful palette of cyclamen and silver,” says Cairoli. “The collection was designed to appeal to the modern romantic, with blooms in neutral colours infused with pink.”

Laura Ashley’s All Grown Up: Signature florals evolved from the smaller ditsy prints Laura Ashley is famous for to more of an oversized floral that suits more contemporary designs.

Modernize the Look: Play with palette and scale. Use large floral prints together with stripes, checks and geometric prints.

Mix It Up: We’re quite fond of print mixing at Laura Ashley so as long as you keep in the same color family, it tends to work.

Making A Home Homey, Not Cutesy

On a two-lane street seamed with cheerful homes America happens. The road is graffitied with chunky chalk drawings. Bicycles swirl by in lazy speeds. A neighbor returns a muffin pan. This is the avenue of our home, which was built when young men were shipped overseas to serve their country in The Great War. It is a humble, charming home with a pointy roof that blends with the block’s neighborly atmosphere. Inside we made it our own.

Dogs, kids, snacks are all welcome on the couch, which is meant for sitting and less stress with washable slipcovers and cases.

Dogs, kids, snacks are all welcome on the couch, which is meant for sitting and less stress with washable slipcovers and cases.

Imagine falling into Jeannie’s bottle, a lair so comforting it in no way relates to the ornamental bottle. Our house traipses into the fantastical with unexpected colors and accents.  We chose pieces that won’t be the subject of a freak out when kids spill chocolate milk or the dog snags a spot on the couch when we are out–all regular occurrences here.

The main living area that is the focal point in our house, which also seamlessly flows into the dining and kitchen area. Can you spy the string of a helium balloon and arrangement of blocks?

There are always games in motion. Artwork is created. Food is prepared and enjoyed. There are helium balloons that get caught in the rafters that take a week to fall to the ground. Neighborhood kids wander in and out.

I grew up with the understanding that you wore hand gloves to the theater and tea is served with squared blocks of sugar. A mix of old values and new traditions collide in our home. While we respect the past, value special passed down pieces, we scale back to fit into today’s lifestyle and design.

Kitchen with retro, modern appliances.

Kitchen with retro, modern appliances.

Task List for a Modern Retro Home without the Clutter:

  1. Quality Pieces: Fewer furnishings loaded with style can carry a room. Consider when to splurge or style with simple, trendy accents like pillows and throws.
  2. Add Color with Accessories: Painting the walls white is the ultimate blank canvas. This allows you to design with statement pieces, like wicker furniture painted in a punchy color, art or appliances.
  3. Use Washable Upholstery and Fabrics: Eliminate anxiety when someone drinks something aside from water on the couch. Use slipcovers and washable pillowcases to keep a home stress-free and comfortable.
  4. Retro Kitchen Appliances Add Impact: A new refrigerator in a mod design, supported by a microwave, espresso maker or appliance with a period look, distinguish the kitchen.

The Accent Pieces:

  1. Linked-In style: When designing a room bring in like-minded pieces for keep a cohesive theme.
  2. Picture frames: Family photos are the personal accent to a lived in home, which are connected through the shell frames.
  3. Wall art: Simple pictures with spots of color like prints from books or maps, expertly framed, bring interest above and add style.
  4. Toys: To keep the “family” in family room, kid toys should always be available. An easel or blocks concealed in baskets or drawers make the room more inviting for the 10 and under crowd.
