How to Unplug on Summer Weekends

Put the mobile device down. Sounds similar to a counter terrorist expert trying to diffuse a madman and, in many respects, we have become a bit psychotic when it comes to our electronics. Take a moment, or days, to unplug for fear of an Orwellian outcome. How to break from our devices on summer weekends? Circle back to holidays spent pre emoticons and wind chime ringtones, where the simplest activities are the most rewarding.

If you must use a vehicle, get in the nostalgic spirit and choose a vintage model.

10 steps to unplug on summer weekends
  1. Visit your local Walgreen’s and stock up on all the play things you had as a kid like bubbles, sidewalk chalk, kites, sparklers, bug kits and plastic whiffle ball bats. Strewn across the lawn and find that an afternoon will slip by with childlike fun.
  2. Ride bikes, swim, sail, play tennis, badminton and croquet: engage in summer sports for some rigorous activity.
  3. When driving always choose a convertible or vintage model.
  4. Create a campfire setting, even in your own backyard, with a fire pit, s’mores and tent.
  5. Play charades, scavenger hunt or other classic games that still reign.
  6. Research local activities and discover what your town has to offer, such as food shows or parades.
  7. Design a themed weekend where each day takes on a new event. Examples include breakfast for dinner, inside out day or impersonating your favorite character.
  8. Explore local areas, find out their main claim to fame, and make a day trip out of it.
  9. Plan a beach day and pack a picnic.
  10. Visit a crafts store, stock up, and compose an afternoon around art and painting en plein air.
