Small Homes Are Trending, Here’s Why

Dissecting millennial traits has become popular sport for marketers, interpreting their love of Ubers and anathema to anything DIY, but this group can be quite practical despite the initiative. Take their preference for smaller homes, which maximizes square footage over superfluous space.

The modifications to this 1950s East Hampton clapboard and how to unearth its inherent character with modern updates will quell the desire to sling a wrecking ball to a period home. Where to spend, when to save and learning to embrace the appeal of a smaller home will all be explored in this series that will be profiled in real time.

Renewing the trend of a smaller home and its worthy traits, which capitalizes on shared time, charm and practicality.

How to Determine Quality Items

There’s good retro, like worn out Levi’s and malted milk shakes sipped with the swivel of a soda fountain chair. Then we have bad retro—sideburns and pine tree air fresheners that make you want to vomit in the back seat of a cab. Currently I am packing for a new home, a process that has reunited me with unopened boxes that didn’t make the cut from the last move.

A push-button phone in a statement color is too innovative to toss, making for a worthy accent for a styled vignette.

Girly Gypsy Style – Think Couture Hippy

She’s earthy but would rather be pampered in a boutique hotel than zip up for the night in a tent. She’s a free-spirit with an edge. One part bohemian, one part glam, Girly Gypsy style has the color and hippy flare of a caravan without all the incense.

The Nayland Throw Blanket is a perfect example of Girly Gypsy, both feminine and organic.

The Notre Dame Fire Is a Sign to Safeguard All Great Churches

Notre Dame took a century to build. The thought is enough for a millennial to take up permanent residence in a hotel. In my town significant homes are a franchise, erected in less than a year. Thus relics of a time when craftsmanship was executed by artisans who had genius creator listed on their credentials is all the more sacred. Notre Dame survived the French Revolution and Nazi occupation. It hosted coronations and was the inspiration behind hunchbacks and gargoyles.

Luc outside of Notre Dame, who will hopefully remember this sublime structure in its original form.

The cathedral is a reminder of the lore behind gothic structures, with their vaulted ceilings built with the intention to be closer to God. It’s a place of worship, belief and Catholicism. My hope is that the overwhelming charity of funding will bring together a team of today’s brilliant artisans and restore this work of art, which will always inspire a modern world.

Is there a lesson from the Notre Dame fire and its ironic timing that coincides with Holy Week? God is known for delivering messages in obscure ways. Just think of the significance behind this week’s Good Friday and Easter Sunday.

My Parisian family are avid collectors, preservationists and advocates for antiquities. They stressed the importance of not only Notre Dame but all of France’s churches, which have recently been the victims vandalism. Perhaps it takes a tragic fire to shed light on such issues.

Florists Take Note – Handmade Paper Flowers Never Expire

Flowers have some competition. The paper variety made by Suzi McLaughlin has such artistry, gardens may start to overpopulate due to the handmade demand. They add impact without the depressing onset of wilting and come with the softness and color of the real version with a modern edge.

Give flowers some time off with a paper floral garland adorning a simple banister.

In McLaughlin’s new book, The Paper Florist (Kyle Books; March 2019), the floral cut-outs ornament everything from party decor to hair accessories, truly identifying a one-of-a-kind style.

If you’re impatient for spring’s arrival and rather skip the crocus teaser for the cherry blossom shebang, cut right to it with a mobile you can make.

Embellish cherry blossoms in your decor without cutting a tree.

Living with Flowers, It’s a Necessity

March is that in between month that’s as transitional as a teen. Just because you’re ready for spring doesn’t mean winter is about to relinquish her season. This is why Margot Shaw’s new book, Living Floral, Entertaining and Decorating with Flowers, is the ideal salve for those who crave the nuances of nurturing weather. Create your own uplifting environment with flowers. And what better way than to cull ideas from tables and settings of such tastemakers as Charlotte Moss, Cornelia Guest, Susanne Rheinstein and event designer Tara Guérard among others. The range in seasonal styles is sure to inspire. In fact, no setting is complete without flowers, an edict to live by.

From Charlotte Moss’ personalized foreward to tastemakers who share their floral schemes, the underlying message is personalization. Such an approach will allow guests to know your true self. Says Cornelia Guest, “Don’t redecorate a room or put your pets elsewhere–your guests are coming to your house, and it’s where you live. Sharing a glimpse into your life is a part of entertaining and is as important as all the other aspects of your party.”

In a Christmas Decorating Slump? Look to the French!

In the bustle of holiday hoopla, let’s consider Charlie Brown and his timeless message, has Christmas become too commercial? Of course it has, this is why we need the French. Marketing the holiday commits a few offenses: It shrouds its intended biblical origin, ruffles environmentalists by cutting down trees while the fake ones inevitably retire in landfills, and consumptive behaviors escalate. Similar to those popular books on lessons learned from the French, like how to keep fit and avoid cosmetic surgery, France is also a model on how to celebrate the season. Noel is a time for family to come together. Meals are collectively prepared with an emphasis on traditional and natural recipes. Decor is understated and festive. By simplifying the season there is more time to enjoy its activities with family and friends.

Say No to Christmas Consumption with Reusable Gift Wrap

This season celebrate a green Christmas, and we’re not talking about spruce trees or a holiday in Florida. As the holidays are about giving, being eco-aware is the natural thing to do.
